lyrics
oh, Rebecca's got a shotgun
and she don't know how to use it, watch your head
she is after Myra Watkins
and she's bound to fill her up with rat-shot lead
she has a French harp in her pocket
and some dandelion greens
plenty for a rosary
to wipe her black slate clean
Myra was the teacher
in the quiet village there
the grades were one through seven
and delinquency was rare
for Myra had a splintered paddle
that was wicked to the eye
her visage unforgiving
and her stature six feet high
Rebecca's little Alice
was a student at the school
she wasn't scared of Myra
but she didn't break the rules
now Alice had a head
that made up for her fragile, little case
she was good at math and English
and she seldom made mistakes
when Myra switched the '-ei'
on the blackboard, Alice knew
a lightbulb went on in her mind
and up her hand she threw
Myra blankly called out 'Alice'
and, well, Alice quickly rose
she pointed out politely
that the letters were transposed
the teacher looked behind her
and her face grew cherry red
then she regained her composure
and she very softly said,
'Alice, come down here
and pull your britches down for all to see
it's time you're off your high horse
'cause you've disrespected me'
Myra paddled for a lifetime
Alice kept the teardrops down
so great a cloud of witnesses
who never made a sound
Alice lips fell open
and her eyes turned white as snow
Myra kept on whipping
till her tempo faded slow
a boy points to the river
and says 'teach is doin' laundry'
Rebecca saunters over
and taps her shoulder gently
Rebecca fires and plucks the dandelion from her breast
and plays upon the French harp hymns of joy into the West
