Blueboots
03:05
|
|||
Blueboots walkin' towards the boarded door
and Blueboots kicks against the goads
she's full of piss and chocolate cake
and she skateboards everywhere she goes
sometimes
she wears a trenchcoat to the corner store
then she clanks and rattles down the road
she rents a shack down by the lake
and says it's full of holy ghosts
she has a table, soft as stone
and sets four places every night
one for her, two for the phantoms
and one for missus right
one night she rose to fix some trout
and her fridge was full of stains
she started out to fish for breakfast
then her eyes were caught insane
for there danced a creature miles high
and Blueboots scrambles up the hill
she's prettier than diamond rings,
gold bells, or dollar bills
she stopped and stared with floral eyes
then Blueboots fine'lly speaks
'what ties that bind thee, little thing?
and might I have a peek?'
the creature gasped and slapped her face
and ran into the woods
Blueboots chases after her
and leaves that shack for good
Blueboots walkin' towards the boarded door
and Blueboots kicks against the goads
she's full of piss and chocolate cake

ride-- with flying colors
raincheck-- in my hand
station's-- awful crowded
hear the porter's loud demands
'keepsie-- all aboard for 'keepsie
get to-- the stage on time
problem?-- ask the brakeman
and no one beats the rainbow line
thanks for choosing our way
please don't worry while you're here
we hope you enjoy your stay
and remember rainbow through the years
yes, sir-- this old train is moving
smoother-- than polished steel
fast as-- the flooding Echo
dip my hands in and I'll be healed
thanks for choosing our way
please don't worry while you're here
we hope you enjoy your stay
and remember rainbow through the years
thanks for choosing our way
please don't worry while you're here
we hope you enjoy your stay
and remember rainbow through the years
remember rainbow through the years

I want to go outside and drink out of the pond
chew the mint and onions from the ground
sow and reap until my heart stops
walk the aisles of the right shops
and she could feed the world
I want to climb all of the high trees
rip and dirty all my worn jeans
mend and spin until my heart stops
walk the aisles of the right shops
and she could feed the world
I want to bathe out in the sunshine
ripen sour watermelon wine
jar and can until my heart stops
walk the aisles of the right shops
and she could feed the world
I want to say hello to mister fox
mother owl, missus polecat, sister ox
jabber on until my heart stops
walk the aisles of the right shops
and she could feed the world

Young and free and dangerous, chained to a job that everybody knows
Don a jacket, leather boots, a purse all filled with sandwiches and oreos
There's nothing better, darling, than a walk out in the spring
To smell the dewdrop carousels and feel the sunlight's sting
Run away, oh, run away all where the angels run away
Just tell the boss I'm sick today, tell him I'm not feeling very well
They don't need me there anyway, just lie, I'm sure you will not go to hell
I'm sure you won't have trouble, the way you lie to me
I'm goin' to the forest with my huckleberry tea
Run away, oh, run away all where the angels run away
And she takes the bus far out of town and shouts out 'this is it'
She examines what's before her like a pair of shoes to see if they will fit
Trees as tall as the factory and scarier at that
Feet are curved for bumpy ground, not sidewalks that are flat
Run away, oh, run away all where the angels run away
And with her brain all purring softly like a brand new Mercury
She spies a perfect walking stick and steals it from its leaning place leisurely
Rough and solid, something I can count on in despair
God's as good as symbols to a mind beyond repair
Run away, oh, run away all where the angels run away
The fluttering of sparrows and the chirping, cackling answer of the thrush
The crackle, rustle, crackle, rustle drones into the realm of nature's hush
The forest's awful noisy, like a town un-amplified
The town all where the old Ruth Anne has been a-left to die
Run away, oh, run away all where the angels run away
Keep your mind fast to the stick, don't dance with other thoughts inside your head
Or pass between the pathless, barren darkness where the black is almost red
The stick is floating, I will follow to that place of rest
I will lay right where it touches down and hold it to my breast
Run away, oh, run away all where the angels run away
Run away, oh, run away all where the angels run away

The Larkin Brothers
02:03
|
|||
the Larkin brothers weaned on grease and hardtac
mother Larkin hid her breasts away
they kept their feelings deep inside a gunny sack
that mother Larkin threw into the Great Salt Lake
she taught them of the cowboys and the Indians
and the witches that were crucified on Calvary
don't ever step onto a crack that's there right on the sidewalk
or you will surely be the death of me
take your guns to town, boys
or they'll rend you all to pieces
don't leave your guns at home
or they'll surely shoot you first
take your guns to town, boys
they will rid you of diseases
don't leave your guns at home
or you'll be surely cursed
they shot their pistols high and broke the dishes
the cautious waitress bowed her head and hid
their mama raised them awful mean and vicious
stealin' trains and throwin' rocks at kids
they hopped the nearest train to California
stole two hundred dollars from a rich man
shot up the engineer and then they fled into Nevada
they survived on sand and thistles of the desert land
raisin' hell outside of Tuscarora
a telegram left on their front porch rockin' chair
it read Tabby Larkin's dead in Ivins, Utah
they burned her body and cut off all her hair
they threw her ashes in the Virgin river
you can hear the faintly sizzle to this day
and on some lonely moonless nights, you hear her
screamin' at her husband till she gets her way

The Little Old Man
03:28
|
|||
there's a little old man in the back of the world
wears rings on his pockets and rings on his shoes
with a little green pipe in a little wood case
full of peppermint leaves for a wintery taste
in a cave on the mountain where the old man lives
is a store of lean meat, cake, and gin,
a shelf of books and a bed of cotton
he's happy for the weather, not what money's got him
a ring for all the games he's lost
and all the girls he's double crossed
all from the town he's run away
but in the still you hear him say
eating corn and rye from a plate of gold
he loves the cool, damp, wet, hot, cold
he licks his finger, finds the wind
and wanders into bed again

oh, Rebecca's got a shotgun
and she don't know how to use it, watch your head
she is after Myra Watkins
and she's bound to fill her up with rat-shot lead
she has a French harp in her pocket
and some dandelion greens
plenty for a rosary
to wipe her black slate clean
Myra was the teacher
in the quiet village there
the grades were one through seven
and delinquency was rare
for Myra had a splintered paddle
that was wicked to the eye
her visage unforgiving
and her stature six feet high
Rebecca's little Alice
was a student at the school
she wasn't scared of Myra
but she didn't break the rules
now Alice had a head
that made up for her fragile, little case
she was good at math and English
and she seldom made mistakes
when Myra switched the '-ei'
on the blackboard, Alice knew
a lightbulb went on in her mind
and up her hand she threw
Myra blankly called out 'Alice'
and, well, Alice quickly rose
she pointed out politely
that the letters were transposed
the teacher looked behind her
and her face grew cherry red
then she regained her composure
and she very softly said,
'Alice, come down here
and pull your britches down for all to see
it's time you're off your high horse
'cause you've disrespected me'
Myra paddled for a lifetime
Alice kept the teardrops down
so great a cloud of witnesses
who never made a sound
Alice lips fell open
and her eyes turned white as snow
Myra kept on whipping
till her tempo faded slow
a boy points to the river
and says 'teach is doin' laundry'
Rebecca saunters over
and taps her shoulder gently
Rebecca fires and plucks the dandelion from her breast
and plays upon the French harp hymns of joy into the West

To the Unknown Girl
02:39

here's the ghost
hauntin' your shanty
callin' out, "unshackle me"
he sits on the pile of ash Wednesdays past
waitin' for the reveilee
waitin' for the reveilee
there he lives
beneath the primer coat
singin' second harmony
she'll hum the tune, but he'll sing the words
nearer by my God to Thee
nearer by my God to Thee
feel the love
that whispers in his song
feel every bending note
it's like children lost in New York town
with their mothers in their throats
with their mothers in their throats
here's the star
that ceased to sparkle there
crawling through his charming tone
that see-saw man will let you down
trace your hands and turn to stone
trace your hands and turn to stone
should I whisper
in your living walls
or should I yell from out the screen
hide the mesh inside your eyelids bright
slam the door, and cause a scene?
slam the door, and cause a scene?
here's the ghost
hauntin' your shanty
callin', "will you marry me?"
she'll stare awhile and touch his hand
and turn as white as he
and turn as white as he

Beyond the Latch
03:22

I find the many peck marks in the dark brown walls of typhoid Mary's little hovel underground
it's made from irises and mud, a little piss, a little blood, a lion in red across the door
you'll cross her threshold and you'll ask yourself a question and it's 'what's the smell that glistens all around?'
it's not the cauldron bubbling with its tiny kippers or the bread that's in the oven getting warm
you'll find the many peck marks in the dark brown walls of typhoid Mary's little hovel, like I said
they follow down the hallway, feel what they're playing, blow into them and they'll sing a tune you know
into the kitchen, 'hind the aprons and the knives, there is a door that wears a star upon his head
you'll have to force him, mind your skill, and pass into, underneath the pewter bucket, there's a glow
take three, no two, and into three, and tangle up the melody, and you can lift the bucket from the hatch
the hatch will open with this talisman, beneath your hand and then the lock will break and reach inside
'oh, did you think you were alone? you foolish man of flesh and bone, who strives to reach beyond the latch
I've moved my safe since then and in its place a geyser, reach on in and open there to meet your bride'

hinges, oh, hinges, looking for hinges
hinges to keep me from slamming like that
keep blowing in my direction that way
and I'll toss side to side and hold on to my hat
I'll toss side to side and hold on
the great searcher searches, searches and searches
searching is fine and finding just isn't her game
keep blowing in her direction that way
and she'll search shore to shore and she'll drown in the rain
and the searcher will search and she'll drown
and I'll toss side to side and hold on
the poor butcher butches, butches and butches
he'd rather be reading a cheap magazine
keep blowing in his direction that way
and he'll chase you around with his butcher machine
and the butcher will chase you around
and the searcher will search and she'll drown
and I'll toss side to side and hold on
the old scourer scourses, scourses and scourses
scouring through offices, alleys, and trash
keep blowing in his direction that way
and he'll borrow your earrings and steal your sash
and the scourer will scour the town
and the butcher will chase you around
and the searcher will search and she'll drown
and I'll toss side to side and hold on
the new lump of sugar, sweetens and sweetens
sweet'ning the sidewalk with sweet sunnyshine
keep blowing in her direction that way
and she'll stick out her tongue and she'll pull down the blinds
and the sugar pins medicine down
and the scourer will scour the town
and the butcher will chase you around
and the searcher will search and she'll drown
and I'll toss side to side and hold on

boxes, wind up the boxes
play the song over, live like a king
this one plays 'Rosie O'Grady'
the prize of my storehouse, just hear the tines ring
I'll show the whole world if I have to
even if they don't want to, what's the difference to me?
records are fine and so is the songbird
but my little wood boxes are a rare quality
snowin', in summer it's snowin'
nothin' so pretty as white woolen snow
this one's as small as a raindrop
the prize of my storehouse, just look at them go
I'll show the whole world if I have to
even if they don't want to, what's the difference to me?
summer's ok and spring sure is welcome
but my little glass snowdomes are somethin' to see
easy, pleasure is easy
play the song over, live like a king
this one plays...
